<image:title>blog - self-actualization is intersectional - “Males as a group have and do benefit the most from patriarchy, from the assumption that they are superior to females and should rule over us. But those benefits have come with a price. In return for all the goodies men receive from patriarchy, they are required to dominate women, to exploit and oppress us, using violence if they must to keep patriarchy intact. Most men find it difficult to be patriarchs. Most men are disturbed by hatred and fear of women, by male violence against women, even the men who perpetrate this violence. But they fear letting go of the benefits. They are not certain what will happen to the world they know most intimately if patriarchy changes. So they find it easier to passively support male domination even when they know in their minds and hearts it is wrong. Again and again men tell me they have no idea what it is feminists want. I believe them. I believe in their capacity to change and grow. And I believe if they knew more about for feminism they would no longer fear it, for they would find in feminist movement the hope of their own release from the bondage of patriarchy. Imagine living in a world where there is no domination, we are females and males are not alike or even always equal, but where in visual of mutuality is the ethos shaping our interaction. Imagine living in a world where we can all be who we are, a world of peace and possibility. Feminist revolution alone will not create such a world; we need to end racism, class elitism, imperialism. But it will make it possible for us to be fully self-actualised [people] able to create beloved community, to live together, realising our dreams of freedom and justice, living the truth that we are all “created equal.” - bell hooks from Feminism is for Everybody</image:title>

<image:title>blog - daily recovery: tree climbing - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Someone challenged me recently by simply asking, “What does your daily recovery practice look like?” • • He said spirituality doesn’t need to wait until the 11th step in recovery. He challenged me to choose one thing. So I put on my new kicks and went on a walk for a coffee. On the way home I spent some time with my new friend, Cedar. I kicked off my shoes and climbed barefoot up to a seat (modestly off the ground - I’m over 40. I mean, know your limits ). The breeze became my prayer and the branches my hammock. I think this is a practice I can stick with. • “My tree” growing up was a huge weeping willow. Sometimes we have to go back to our first loves, the original safe places and rhythms we had before things got complicated and systematic. • What could your simple rhythm look like today?</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - i am enough. - I am not for everyone. Not everyone is for me. I am enough. • This is hard for anyone who likes to be liked. It’s complicated for those who have traumatic experiences with rejection. Growing up in a dysfunctional family can also set us up for this struggle. It can be difficult to hold the actions or inactions of others loosely or decline to let those things speak to our sense of self-worth. • But we can choose to speak the truth to ourselves. I put little reminders all over my house. Little mantras that I repeat to myself until they stick. How can you remind yourself of your power and value today?</image:title>

<image:title>About Heather - Heather Penzel, MA Spiritual Director | Reiki Practitioner | Queer & Non-Binary My Story My awareness of God's presence began early—raised in a Christian home where I knew about the divine in my head, but not yet in my heart. That changed when I entered adulthood and faced a personal struggle with depression. I issued an ultimatum to the Divine: "I need You to make what I know in my head about Your love real in my heart, or I don't want to do this anymore.” What followed was a journey that would reshape my entire understanding of faith.. I spent time in a charismatic Vineyard Church community that became like family, incubating my tender heart. Then came a transformative 6-month internship spending midnight to 6am in a prayer room. It was in contemplative prayer that I most clearly heard God's voice and felt divine love. I learned that while charismatic experiences can be like throwing gasoline on a small flame, the contemplative tradition is the slow-burning heat that transforms us from within. Finding my way home When I discovered Quakerism during seminary, everything shifted. I sensed God sitting quietly with me, allowing me to be in my anger and rage without correction, judgment, or turning away. This transformed my images of the divine and allowed me to finally accept myself as a queer, non-binary person. That experience of being held without judgment—of being seen and loved exactly as I am—became the foundation of my work as a spiritual director. More recently, I've been influenced by teachers and practitioners outside the Christian tradition: Hawayo Takata, Papa Joe Delamere, Ram Dass, Chani Nicholas, Eckhardt Tolle, and the poet Hafiz. It's been a beautiful season of seeing the values of Jesus lived out in diverse streams of faith. Today, I'm part of a local Quaker meeting and a spiritual recovery program.</image:title>
