Frequently Asked Questions

Spiritual Direction

  • Spiritual direction is a sacred companionship between two people, where one person seeks a deeper connection with the divine. The spiritual director helps by listening deeply, asking open-ended questions, and supporting the directee in discerning where Spirit is moving in their life.

  • Spiritual direction has roots in many religious traditions, but you don't need to be religious to benefit from it.

Whether you relate to the divine as God, Spirit, Universe, Mystery, or something else entirely, spiritual direction can support your journey. I welcome people of all faith backgrounds—and no faith background.

  • Therapy focuses on mental health, emotional healing, and problem-solving. It addresses psychological and behavioral concerns.

Spiritual direction focuses specifically on your relationship with the divine and the spiritual dimensions of your life. It's about noticing where Spirit is at work, deepening your faith, and supporting your spiritual growth.

Many people benefit from both therapy and spiritual direction—they serve different, complementary purposes.

  • Life coaching helps you set and achieve goals.

Mentoring involves someone with experience guiding you based on their knowledge.

Spiritual direction is not about achieving goals or following someone else's path. It's about your unique relationship with the divine, with no agenda except deeper listening and discernment.

Getting Started

  • Absolutely. Many people come to spiritual direction without knowing exactly what they're looking for—and that's completely normal.

That's why I offer a free initial consultation to help you understand what spiritual direction is and whether it feels right for you.

  • No. While I recommend trying at least 3 sessions to give spiritual direction a fair experience (especially if you're new to the practice), there's no long-term commitment required.

Some people work with a spiritual director for years; others find what they need in a few sessions. It's entirely up to you.

  • In your free consultation, we'll talk about:

    • What you're seeking and what brought you here

    • What spiritual direction is and whether it might be a good fit

    • How our work together would look

    • Any questions or concerns you have

There's no pressure—it's simply a chance to get to know each other.

Logistics

  • Sessions are typically are 55 minutes

  • Most people meet monthly or every other week, though we can adjust the frequency based on your needs and what feels right for your journey.

  • Yes! Sessions can be held in person or virtually.

  • Some people find it easier to process and reflect while moving, especially those with ADHD or who feel more grounded when walking.

In a walking session, we meet at an agreed-upon location and walk together while we talk. It's all the same spiritual direction work, just with the added benefit of movement.

  • Please provide 24-48 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session.

About the Practice

  • That's entirely up to you. Some common topics include:

    • Life transitions (career, relationships, loss, new beginnings)

    • Big decisions that need spiritual discernment

    • Exploring or deepening spiritual practices

    • Healing from spiritual trauma or deconstructing harmful beliefs

    • Feeling disconnected from faith or spiritual community

    • Questions about meaning, purpose, and identity

    • Simply wanting a space to reflect and listen for the divine

  • No. Spiritual direction is not about advice-giving.

I'll ask questions, reflect back what I notice, and help you listen for where the Spirit is leading—but I won't impose my own beliefs or agenda. This is your journey.

  • Yes. Everything you share in spiritual direction is confidential, with rare exceptions:

    • If you disclose intent to harm yourself or others

    • If there is suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult

    • If required by law

  • No preparation is required. Just come as you are, with an open heart.

Some people like to reflect on their experiences between sessions or keep a spiritual journal, but that's entirely optional.
