Who I am

Heather Penzel

Kia ora, I'm Heather. A spiritual companion, reiki practitioner and contemplative guide based in Waikanae, Aotearoa New Zealand.

What you can expect from me

  • A warm, confidential space, without judgement or agenda

  • Curious questions that help you hear yourself more clearly

  • Respect for your tradition (or no tradition), your body, your pace

  • Companionship, not direction. The true direction is the One sometimes called God, Spirit, Mystery, or whatever name fits for you

My Story

I grew up in a Christian family and came to faith young. As an adult I faced my own struggle with depression and asked the Divine to make what I knew in my head about love real in my heart.

A six month internship in a midnight to dawn prayer room became the most formative season of my adult life. Contemplative prayer, more than anything else, taught me how to listen.

I was introduced to Quakerism at seminary, and in that quiet I felt God sit with me in my anger without correction or judgement. That presence transformed how I see myself, and gave me space to accept myself as a queer, non binary person.

More recently I have been shaped by teachers outside the Christian tradition: Ram Dass, Eckhart Tolle, Hafiz, Chani Nicholas. I belong to a local Anglican community and a spiritual recovery programme. It has been a beautiful season of seeing the values of Jesus lived out across many streams of faith.

A sacred text that has stayed with me reads: "I am certain that God, who began the good work in you, will carry it onto completion." My hope is to pass that faith on, to help others see themselves as divinely created, whole people. Body, mind, emotions and spirit.

Traditions and teachers that shape my practice

  • Contemplative Christianity (Quaker, Anglican, Vineyard roots)

  • Reiki (lineage of Hawayo Takata)

  • Spiritual recovery programmes

  • Teachers outside the Christian tradition: Ram Dass, Eckhart Tolle, Hafiz, Chani Nicholas
